Doors open at 6pm, sign-ups by 6.15pm, names called out by 6.30pm, and the open mic to start at 7pm. At least, that’s the published format. It was clear I was getting a spot due to the low attendance just before names were being called. Then an influx of people showed up and were allowed to put their names in after the first group of names were called. A guaranteed spot for me, for sure. However, I was the last name called of that first group so took the open 7.15pm slot.
Surprisingly, the gig started at 6.45pm meaning I’d actually go on at 7pm. It was fine by me but does mess up the timing of anyone who knew I’d be there and were hoping to get there by 7pm but were running in late and may miss some of my set. Fortunately, I brought my pedalboard, backing tracks, and electric guitar so it took about 2 minutes to set up.
When I did go on, it was loud. The stage was lumping to bass/ drums and all of my sounds came through crystal clear. I thought the room sounded amazing. It seemed a lot of people had great feedback after the show, especially about the tones I got out of my Fractal Ax8 pedalboard. I thought so too and did some major tweaking to it after the Nantucket gigs.
The open mic had several familiar faces, all not only great performers but also supportive fans. It’s a great environment, with a great turnout, and worth staying for even before/ after I play. Hope to see you at the next one!
