On 05/22, I played the Fallout Shelter’s Open Mic Night. This is a cool room with a great vibe that screams support for the local, indie music scene. They book touring acts & local musicians, as well as host a monthly open mic (12 lottery slots at 15 minutes each).
What’s different about their open mic policy than most is if your name isn’t of the 12 called for 2 continuous open mics, you’re guaranteed a slot that 3rd month. They also offer a service to record and then email you your performance.
I knew I had slot that night since I wasn’t called the previous months. What I didn’t know was that one of my guitar heroes, Jon Finn, would be there to play a set with his wife for their duo: Jon and Julie. I’ve played gigs with them years ago and they are amazing guitarists and a fun hang.
With this open mic, the earlier slots are better in that the musicians need to be there to sign up so it could start as a full house and then people tend to leave after they play.
It was a great night of music in a great venue and one that I hope to keep on my calendar for the foreseeable future.
